Heritage Transport

  • Transport Heritage NSW is the main, state government supported saviour of old transport. It is the "umbrella" organisation for many museums, journeys and tours across the state as shown in the Locations and Experiences page.

  • Lachlan Valley Railway operates many heritage train tours throughout the state. Their operation is based in Cowra. Trains run aplenty, with booking available on the web site.
  • Running of the Kiama Picnic Train has been taken over by Sydney Rail Services using LVR loco 5917.

  • East Coast Heritage Rail formerly 3801 Limited also run trains around Sydney. They are the operators of the famous, stream lined locomotive 3801, which is currently out of service during bolier maintenance. Train tours are currently diesel hauled.

  • St James Rail operates escorted rail journeys across Australia and around the world.

2019 Transport Heritage Expo

New South Wales Transport Museum stages this event over the 3 days of Queens Birthday Weekend in June. This year's event added steam boats to the mix of buses and old trains.

To start with a bang, the first event on Saturday is the Great Train Race, wherein 2 (or 3) trains "race" from Central to Strathfield station. After that event, there are scheduled shuttle services from Central, mostly to Hurstville, but the rail motors had 2 unusual routes - one via Olympic Park station, and the other along the freight lines normally inaccessible to mere mortals.

Locomotive 3801 crossing Sydney Harbour Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge celebrated its 90th birthday on 19th March 2022. The plan was to have the steam train cross the bridge from the South, stop in the middle, and the electric train would come from the North and stop to celebrate the 90th birthday.

However, there was a problem. The steam loco was locked in its home due to a washout of the track following the persistent rain this year.
