The flight down to San Diego flew east of Mt. St. Helens, and fortunately I was sitting on the right hand side of the plane, thus enjoying an excellent view of Mt. St. Helens.
This view is from the North East, showing the crater, the new Spirit Lake (where Harry Truman had a lodge, and is now buried) as well as the mud flow along the Tootle River. The lake on the left, near the top, is probably Yale Lake, a hydro-electric dam. The lake on the right hand side is Clearwater Lake, one of the new ones resulting from the eruption. There is a visitor's centre above Clearwater Lake.
This view is a little closer to the mountain. In the distance, near the top of the image, you can see the Columbia River as it makes its way to the Paciific Ocean.
This is a closer view of the crater and Spirit Lake. The dark area inside the crater's snow is the lava dome, which has been growing since the eruption. It is the mountain rebuilding itself.
A close up of the peak and crater.
A ground based view is also available.
