April 20th this year was Easter Sunday. Kelly and I went off to Mass, and found at least one other of the "boat people" there too! After Mass we returned to the hotel for breakfast, but it was more like an Easter Sunday brunch, and was very popular, booked well in advance. So we ended up sitting at the bar! But refrained from sampling the treats.
Early morning - about 7:15 AM - view from my hotel room. The Klondike Express departed about midnight (several folks saw it leave!), so the dock is now empty. And it was just dead calm! Alas, I took this photo through the (dirty) window in my room - last night's were taken by opening the window and holding the camera outdoors. As a consequence, the dirty patches on the window come out in this image.
After breakfast, Kelly suggested we walk across the bridge to Douglas Island, where there was a street with nice houses. The street worked it's way up the hill, and the views were good. So off we went.
Original Juneau, from Douglas Island. The boat was docked just about the location of the left tree branch of the bare tree on the right. And here's a closeup of the Goldbelt Hotel in which we were staying.
The trees hide some of the southern end of Juneau, with snow capped Mt. Roberts being about mid image.
A close up of some of the peaks a little further south of Juneau. I don't know the names of these peaks.
Back in the hotel, the sun is much higher over the Gastineau Channel, looking towards Douglas Island. But there is some wind to bring ripples to the calm surface from this morning.
Part of the reason for returning to our hotel was that we had walked just about everywhere that seemed interesting. The front desk suggested hiring a taxi as tour guide for the afternoon, so that we did, and had a very pleasant tour, guided by a local, who filled us in on the history and local colour of Juneau.
