Looking back to downtown San Francisco from outside the Golden Gate Bridge.

A closer view of the Golden Gate Bridge strcuture. The "metal pipe" at the top contains the cables which hold the bridge deck.

The north pylon of the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito is just around the corner, and the settlement visible on the right of the image is Tiburon.

The whole Golden Gate Bridge, seen off the back of the boat as we are heading towards Alcatraz Island's north side.

Alcatraz Island - North Side

The western end of the island. These buildings are showing signs of years of neglect, especially significant as the island is very exposed to the weather.

Moving along the island.

The dock here was the transfer point for prisoners. That's why there is a watchtower, which apparently had armed guards when the prison was in use.

The eastern end of the island, with a tour boat approaching the wharf.

San Francisco Bay and Back

The two halves of the Oakland Bridge, which runs east west across the bay. It's also a 2 level bridge. The left photo shows the eastern side (which almost collapsed during the 1989 earthquake). The island is Yerba Beuna Island, with "Treasure Island" on the left side.

Coming back into the dock, showing parts of the Fisherman's Wharf area. Also visible are the twin spires of Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

The sea lions enjoy the resting areas in the dock!

The tour was over, so it was time to check out Fisherman's Wharf area on foot.
