Peter and I ate breakfast in the motel cafe while Yvonne caught up on traveller's duty. After breakfast Peter and I went for a walk. Up hill towards the city centre.

We came across Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, which is a quite attractive older style church.

Side View Front View
Washington Square Park is directly across the street from the church, which looks somewhat more plain on the outside than it is inside. The side view also shows Coit Tower in the distance.

Our path lead back to the waterfront. This photograph shows Alcatraz as seen from there. We also checked out the various harbour cruises and bought tickets for an afternoon cruise.

Later Yvonne joined us and we went to midday Mass, followed by a light lunch before boarding our cruise around the bay.

On The Boat

We were early enough to get an outdoor seat on the top of the boat. This provided us with a better view than the lower decks. Before leaving the wharf, we had an excellent view of some San Francisco landmarks - the Coit Tower on the left, and TransAmerica Building on the right. TransAmerica is an insurance company, with an icon building.

The tour passes on the south (city) side of Alcatraz Island. It's believed that no prisoner escaped; two left the island, but were never seen again, and it is believed they either died of hyperthermia or were swept out to sea. There are now guided tours of the former prison.

The boat heads towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Along the way it passes the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, also known as the Presidio of San Francisco - a former military installation. The dome is from the time of the San Francisco Exposition. The large tower in the background is the common TV transmitting tower for San Francisco, located at "Twin Peaks".

It seems we are in a race with another tour company to see who passes under the Golden Gate first! Still the Presidio in the background, on the south shore.

Looks like that other boat will beat us! Note that the southern approach to the Golden Gate Bridge was built OVER a military installation, now Fort Point National Historic Site.

We are about to cross under the Golden Gate Bridge.
