After leaving the dam, the trip continued south on the Old Princes Highway, until the road heading off to Stanwell Park. At this time, the coastal road south from Stanwell Park was closed due to rock slides, but I was not headed that way anyway.
The spectacular view looking south from Stanwell Tops, over Stanwell Park all the way past Wollongong.
A close up view of Stanwell Park, including a train rounding the mountain heading south.
A closer view of the southern extremities, including the steam plume from the steelworks in Woollongong.
The Hargrave Monument, with his back turned to the view!
The plaque on the monument reads:
Lawrence Hargrave, 1850 - 1915, whose pioneering research in Aeronautics with Engines, Monoplanes and Box-Kites, much of which was carried out at Stanwell Park, played a vital part in the development of the aeroplane.
The monument was designed by John W. Hope, 1940.
