San Diego Fireworks

A white blob surrounded by smoke

About 10PM I was sitting in my room reading up on the next day's events at the Usenix Conference. Then I heard some popping noises, so looked out the window, to find there was a fireworks display just outside my room. So out came the the camera, and snap, snap snap. I have no idea what the celebration was for; however, there was a rock concert on the Coronado Peninsula, which I could hear without any trouble in my room.

Sorry for the somewhat blurred image here. I did not have a tripod, and was just leaning the camera on the railing of the balcony. The fireworks were coming from a barge anchored mid stream, and you can see the Coronado Peninsula in the middle of the image.

The finale.

Early Return

While at dinner one night, Peter called to tell me that our brother Barry had passed away in his sleep. Not entirely unexpected, but such things come as a shock when it does happen. Naturally I wanted to return for the funeral, but was in San Diego, without a passport and with summer geek conference clothes.

After a numebr of phone calls, I arranged to leave early the next morning and fly back to Seattle, unpack clothes and repack for something more suitable, collect passport, let my good neighbours Denny and Geniva know of my changed plans, and fly to Los Angeles for a connecting flight to Sydney. Of course, Los Angeles is right next door to San Diego, but that fact was entirely useless to me.

Smallish town amidst barren hills

Seen out of the window on the flight back to Seattle. At first I thought this was Reno, but it's far too small for that. Some town in that vicinity on the flight back to Seattle from San Diego.
