Mount Stromlo Observatory

The next destination was the Botanical Gardens, however the road passed Mt. Stromlo Observatory so it was time for a return visit. The observatory was burnt out during the 2003 Mount Stromlo bushfires, and in early 2006 it appeared little had been done to repair the damage. It was a very forlorn looking location.

Classic telescope building, white dome roof

The former 74" telescope building. Since the 2006 visit, the dome has been painted, and the building generally cleaned up. The chain link fence surrounding it has mostly been removed. Also visible in the background, left, is the old administration building.

Burnt out inside of telescope building

The inside of the former 74" telescope. Clearly nothing has been done here, and there is no indication of the future of this building.

Several telescope domes

The 3 closest domes were obtained via donations after the fire storm. The two domes in the background have also been refurbished since the 2006 visit, but I did not look to see if they have been cleaned on the outside only as the 74" telescope building has been. It's not entirely obvious to me that one would rebuild the old telescope, even if that is possible.

From here, it was time to continue the journey to the Botanical Gardens.
