Rosenkrantz Tower and Bergenhus Fortress

The Rosenkrantz Tower is located just north of the Bryggen area. It was built in the 1560s by the governor of Bergenhus (Bergen Castle), one Erik Rosenkrantz. It served as a combined fortified tower and residence, and was originally waterfront property, although progress has filled in the land and it is no longer such.

One of any number of rooms in the tower. Nothing especially interesting in any of them, and quite a number, like this one, were essentially empty.

Views From The Top

The final stairs are onto a walkway around the roof.

There's one tower or dome on the building. It's the top of the stairs, down in this case.

The quay in the Bryggen area - the warehouses, and our hotel are to the left of this image; the fish market is at the far end of the quay. The "spike" on the mountain to the left is the communications tower; there's a cable car running to the top, but it's location out of the city centre makes it more of an exercise to reach; there is a bus tour to the cable car station, for those with the time.

More of Bergen spreading up the hills.

Looking at the funicular railway, showing the houses working their way up the hillside. There is actually a stop on the funicular part way up the hill, I presume to provide access to residents living up there.

Looking about north over the Bergenhus Fortress, which is the green area in the foreground. Also shows the wall around the roof top.

The building in the foreground is Håkonshallen, a royal ceremonial hall, erected by Håkon Håkonsson between 1247 and 1261. It was badly damaged in 1944 when a German ammunition ship exploded in the harbour duing World War II. It was restored in 1961 to its current (and thus former) condition.

Bergenhus Fortress

Just immediately north of the Rosenkrantz Tower is the old fort area, now a rather pleasant green area overlooking the harbour, and with the old ramparts still in place.

The northern end of Håkonshallen, but also showing two of the seven hills around Bergen, with Mount Fløyen on the left (with the funicular) and the communications tower mountain to the right.

This statue of King Haakon VII (1872 - 1957) stands looking over the harbour, as seen in the next photo.

Another view of two nearby mountains - the same two as above. Also shows the old ramparts, now nicely grassed and delightful on a sunny day like this.
