Sunday morning after breakfast I headed off to the Cathedral for Mass. Then a return to the hotel to do a little reading on the next stage of the tour and a light lunch. Several of us decided we'd try to catch the tour boat which travels the canals with a jazz band. Touring the canals while listening to jazz sounded like a great idea.
Today's departure point was at Gammel Strand, just a little north of Christiansborg Castle. So at the appropriate time, I started walking in that direction. And came to Højbro Plads. This area was once the fish market, but that has since moved on.
The Højbro Plads features a statue of Bishop Absolon, who was "given" the existing fishing village by Valdemar the Great in 1157. The Bishop built a castle on what is now Christiansborg, directly across the canal from here. He is considered the founder of Copenhagen.
The Bishop riding into town! An amusing amalgam of live and dead creatures in a modern setting.
Bishop Absolon's staute is visible in the left of this image, with the jazz tour boat on the lower right. And you'll note (not too surprisingly) that the jazz boat has no roof! And those skies do look threatening - cue the ominous events music!
Annette, Karyn, Signe and Joey turned up to join the jazz cruise. A quick conference and we decided the covered tour boat, without jazz band, looked more comfortable, so we opted for that.
This, I think, is Nyhavn. This photo vindicates our decision for the indoor boat!
Through the rain is our hotel, behind the ferry.
The old crane used for installing masts in naval ships. Hmmm, the rain seems to be easing. Or perhaps that was the "dry" side of the boat.
Ah, the Little Mermaid. As we reached here, the rain had eased off quite a bit.
And this marked the point where the tour boat does a U turn and heads back to the starting point via a series of canals.
