Day 10 - Barcelona Nights

After Mass, Mel Cusi, the well known Barcelona native, took Peter and I to dinner, and a personal tour of Barcelona. (This was in return for my hospitality to Mel when he came to Seattle for a conference.)

A couple of well known faces at an outdoor market as we walked toward La Rambla.

Las Ramblas, Barcelona - very busy place

The Rambla is a mile long pedestrian throughfare (with vehicle access down each side). It was originally a seasonal riverbed, and now runs down as far as the Christopher Columbus statue. It was a very lively place as we walked down it, with street artists and stalls selling all sorts of things. There was quite a crowd, as can be seen. Even after we finished dinner it was hectic.

Our Lady of Ransom Church

Our Lady of Ransom is the Patroness of the City of Barcelona. The order of the Mercedarians (remember she is Our Lady of "Merced" - meaning mercy, favour) was founded in the 13th Century in Barcelona by the king James I, St Peter Nolascus and a third person, following apparitions of Our Lady to them. The purpose of the monks was to offer themselves in ransom for prisoners of the Turks.

She has certainly protected Barcelona from many disasters and perils. It is a tradition of sporting teams in the last few decades to present their trophies to Our Lady as soon as they return to Barcelona. On open buses, to the acclaim of the crowds, they visit "La Merced" and follow on to the the Town Hall.
