San Simeon or Bust

The plan was to spend the night at San Simeon (the town), then join an early tour of Hearst Castle and return home the next day. Jeffrey and I rode down, while Yiwen (aka Peggy) and her son Lu were to drive down. First stop was a funky restaurant along the coast, Nepenthe located at Big Sur. Wikipedia describes nepenthe as a medicine for sorrow, literally an anti-depressant – a "drug of forgetfulness" mentioned in ancient Greek literature and Greek mythology, depicted as originating in Egypt.

Pretty Chinese lady head shot Yiwen, the object of the photographers above. Well, I had to have one too.

Two men at railing, fiddling with camera, overlooking foggy Pacific Ocean Jeffrey and Lu discussing camera characteristics while looking at a rather foggy Pacific Ocean, though that is quite common along this coast.

Eating area with tables with umbrellas, and coastal, mostly brown hills behind The outdoor eating area of Nepenthe. Indoors was probably full, but it was a really nice day to be outdoors anyway.

Looking down on rocky coastline partially obscured by ocean fog The view from Nepenthe's balcony. There really is ocean down there, it's just a bit hard to see.

Road winding around hill, brown hills behind, some trees and a bird flying through The road south from Nepenthe. Highway 101 here is just a 2 lane road, and would cost a fortune to widen over much of its length, especially in this section. I can't identify the bird in the top left corner.

After Lunch

Bird with blue feathers around head, white underbelly and black tail feathers on rock wall This, I am told, is a Western Scrub Jay which was wary of being photographed at a lookout along the road.

Rocky coastline with small waves breaking against the rocks, and a light fog The fog seems to be lifting as the day goes on. Likely to return overnight, of course.

Parking lot at lookout, with rocky coastline disappearing into the distance Another lookout along the coast. Fog still there, and as it was 15:48, it would seem unlikely to be going to lift completely today.

Silver motorcycle in parking lot of lookout My former trusty steed - a BMW R1150RT, which makes a fine touring bike. It now belongs to Jeffery.

After Dinner at San Simeon

Photographer and trees silhoutted against sun just disappearing below the horizon "And as the sun sinks slowly in the west, we say farewell ...". Yes, the end of the day, with photographers there to capture the event. Including me!

Photographers taking sunset photos, after the sun has gone but sky still light Ah, the glorious colours of sunset, captured here in San Simeon.

Evening colours with tree shilouette in the foreground The day is even closer to its end, an event which this tree has seen many times.

Moon and lights of San Simeon seen through tree branches Moon rise over San Simeon.

Tomorrow, we set out to conquer Hearst Castle!

Destination San Simeon
Jeffrey and I rode down to San Simeon, the small town nearest to Hearst Castle. Peggy (aka Yiwen) and Lu came down in the car! We had rooms booked for the night in a motel in town. Next day was to join a tour of the castle (booked for relatively early) and then head back home at a leisurely pace.
