The plan was to spend the night at San Simeon (the town), then join an early tour of Hearst Castle and return home the next day. Jeffrey and I rode down, while Yiwen (aka Peggy) and her son Lu were to drive down. First stop was a funky restaurant along the coast, Nepenthe located at Big Sur. Wikipedia describes nepenthe as a medicine for sorrow, literally an anti-depressant – a "drug of forgetfulness" mentioned in ancient Greek literature and Greek mythology, depicted as originating in Egypt.
Jeffrey (crouched) photographing Yiwen, while Lu looks on to observe the master at work. This is at the entrance to Nepenthe.
Jeffrey and Lu discussing camera characteristics while looking at a rather foggy Pacific Ocean, though that is quite common along this coast.
The outdoor eating area of Nepenthe. Indoors was probably full, but it was a really nice day to be outdoors anyway.
The road south from Nepenthe. Highway 101 here is just a 2 lane road, and would cost a fortune to widen over much of its length, especially in this section. I can't identify the bird in the top left corner.
This, I am told, is a Western Scrub Jay which was wary of being photographed at a lookout along the road.
Another lookout along the coast. Fog still there, and as it was 15:48, it would seem unlikely to be going to lift completely today.
"And as the sun sinks slowly in the west, we say farewell ...". Yes, the end of the day, with photographers there to capture the event. Including me!
Tomorrow, we set out to conquer Hearst Castle!
