Alki

Alki is located across Elliot Bay from downtown Seattle. It was the location for the initial European settlement, though it quickly moved across the bay to the more sheltered downtown of today.

Downtown Seattle skyline from across Elliot Bay The Seattle skyline has not, to my recollection, changed much during my four year absence. That's not to say there has not been much building activity, just that not much of it has altered the skyline seen from afar.

Smith Tower, a white tiled building with narrower upper section

The Smith Tower was built for the Smith Corona typewriter company. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, and the first (again, west of the Mississippi) to have an elevator. It is still quite a pleasant building to look at.

The background shows part of the Cascade Mountains to the east.

Seattle space needle, Science Center and part waterfront

Perhaps the city's best known landmark, the Space Needle has a very 1960's modern look. Not surprising, as it was built for the 1962 World's Fair staged in that area. It's shape is still very pleasing.

The white, upside down U shapes to the left are part of the Pacific Science Centre, while the pyramid shaped roof on the left belongs to Key Arena (at least that was it's name at one time). The arena was used for Basketball, among other things. And the tall building on the left used to be the Safeco Building; Safeco was a Seattle based insurance company until acquired by another company. The building has been absorbed by the University of Washington, it's nearby neighbour.

And lurking in the background are the Cascade Mountains.

Queen Anne Hill

Queen Anne Hill (and neighbourhood or suburb) is located NNW of downtown Seattle. It's over to the left of the Space Needle photo above. Indeed, the edge of the hill is just visible on the left hand side. The most prominent landmarks on the hill are the three TV transmitter towers. And there's a park with a great view over the downtown area to Mt. Rainier.

Alki viewing area from Queen Anne - tree covered hill and grassy area This image shows the lookout used for the above photos - it's the brighter green area above the white building on the foreshore. The area above is a bit more West Seattle than Alki, but I am not sure where the boundary is located.

Grassy area with benches and view to downtown Seattle I knew there is a park on Queen Anne with a spectacular view of downtown. But it was never on the "to do" list to locate it. So, that was today's chore - drive around looking for it. The choices were relatively limited, but finding the correct east-west street offered a number of possibilities. But then I found it - Kerry Park - as shown here.

Seattle skyline from Kerry Park, Queen Anne Hill This is a better view of the view. There is a lower section of the park, visible in the foreground. There was a significant amount of haze on this day, and Mt. Rainier is only just visible to the right of the Space Needle.

Mt. Rainier somewhat visible over downtown Seattle

This image has been manipulated to improve the visibility of Mt. Rainier. Although I was using a polarising filter, the haze was difficult to counteract, due to the angle of the sun. Late afternoon or early morning would be better.

The two dome shaped objects with ribs on top, near the bottom of the photo, are the two sporting arenas, replacing the Kingdome. The left, only partly visible one, is for football, and is an open air stadium. The one on the right is for basball, and has a retractable roof to keep out the rain.

WA state car ferry coming into dock on Elliot Bay One of the Washington State car ferries coming in to dock at Coleman Wharf on Elliot Bay. Ferries from here operate to a number of places across the sound, including Bremerton.

Tree lined street West Highland Drive looking west, as seen from Kerry Park. There are benefits to older neighbourhoods, with established landscaping.

White painted house on Queen Anne, somewhat hidden by trees A typical style of home for Queen Anne, with mature landscaping.

Modern apartment building beside an older style brick home. The old and new mixing on Queen Anne. I presume the building on the right is for apartments, while the home on the left (perhaps a duplex) shares a million dollar view, as the front of these buildings faces Kerry Park.

Ivar's Salmon House

Some dead reckoning and old memory driving took me through Freemont to Ivar's Salmon House, at the northern end of Lake Union.

Power boat and view to Space Needle across Lake Union I scored a window seat, and this is the view I had over Lake Union to to part of downtown Seattle, with that well known landmark. The dock to which the boat is tied is part of Ivar's, and it's not at all uncommon to see people motor, sail or row up for a feed. There's even outdoor dining at this time of year.

Space Needle and construction cranes There were at least 5 construction cranes visible from my table - three of which are shown here. And they were all working
