The First of July, 2007, marked the 75th anniversary of the Australian Broadcasting Commission's first radio broadcast. Since reformulated and renamed as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the organisation has managed to survive and at times even prosper. The single radio network has now evolved to 5 radio and 2 TV networks domestically, and one radio and one TV network internationally.
To celebrate the event, the ABC's Sydney Headquarters in Ultimo were opened to the public. Well, a few areas were opened. This view is looking north along the Ultimo Pedestrian Network, showing some of the crowd. The buildings on the left are the ABC's building; that on the right is a parking garage. The rail line used to service industrial areas to the north, as well as Darling Harbour when it was a rail yard for the port.
The ABC buildings from Ultimo Road (which parallels George Street). This is actually the back of the building!
A view looking north from about the middle of the atrium in the ABC's Ultimo building. Quite a few people came for the party.
Looking south in the atrium. The posters are from "The Sideshow", with art pieces by Paul McDermott, the program's host.
Different view, same location, but showing more of the upper part of the atrium area - the offices and studios etc. not open to the public.
Ah, the crowd being filmed for later identification and interrogation! This is at the southern (George Street) end of the building, with the entrance to the TV studios being located below and slightly to the left.
