Avon Dam

On April 13th I set forth on a "road trip", to visit friends in Berrima, then onto Canberra before returning to Sydney. As no great distances were involved in any of these legs, I took the "non-freeway" route as much as possible on the way out.

Travelling along the backroads leads to the turnoff to the Avon and Nepean Dams. Hmmm, I suppose I should check them out.

Avon Dam

Construction of Avon Dam began in 1921, and was completed by 1928. In 1971, the wall was strengthened with a rockfill embankment on the downstream side.

Gardens at Avon Dam, with some autumn tones

Just the slightest signs of autumn colour in the trees along one of the tourist walks.

Another view of Avon Dam

Eastern Australia has been suffering from drought for several years, as is evident in this photo showing the low water level.

The "Egyptian style gateway" at the far end, as seen through the other gateway.

Some sort of bird on Avon Dam wall

A slightly wary bird kept walking away from me as I approached to get a better photo.

Spillway

As seemed to be the style back then, the spillway structure is independent of the main wall.
