Forby Sutherland

Looking past Sutherland grave site over tanker to Brighton-le-Sands

The plaque at this monument reads:-

FORBY SUTHERLAND

A seaman on the Endeavour under Captain Cook. The first British subject to die in Australia. Was buried here.

1st May (local date) 2nd May (calendar date). 1770.

R.A.H.S.

The southern region of Sydney, Sutherland Shire, which encompasses this area, is named after Forby Sutherland.

Daniel Solander

Solander and Sutherland monuments, looking towards Dolls Point

The obelisk on the left is for Daniel Solander, who accompanied Cook and his botantist Banks on the journey of discovery.
