Chinook Pass

After leaving Yakima, SR410 heads around Mt. Rainier via Chinook then Cayuse Pass to Enumclaw and eventually ending in Sumner, east of Tacoma. Both Chinook and Cayuse Pass are closed in winter, due to snow - much work is needed to clear the snow for a June opening, especially Chinook Pass.

Chinook Pass

Looking east from just north of Chinook Pass, Wenatchee National Forest

Where I have just come from! The "scar" along the left side is the roadway, working its way to the summit. This photo, and the following, were taken at the viewing area just before the summit, which also marks the entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park.

Looking back along SR410 from almost Chinook Pass

More of the road, and also the effects of the sun setting. This photo was taken about 8:30PM (daylight savings time), a half hour or so before sunset.

R1100S at almost Chinook Pass

The R1100S in the parking area. Obviously not much traffic around! Yes, the white stuff is snow, and yes, it was getting chilly. You'll see why on the next page.

Looking east from Chinook Pass

Also looking from whence I came, but this time zoomed in, to show the layers of mountains and valleys.

Perhaps Naches Peak, from just north of Chinook Pass

Naches Peak, on the boundary between Wenatchee National Forest, and Mt. Rainier National Park. And seen here receiving the last rays of light for the day.

R1100S and looking towards Chinook Pass

Charge! The way ahead to Chinook Pass, and Mt. Rainier National Park. The peak of the road, and the park entrance, are just around the corner.
