The Avenue of the Giants is the older road along the Eel River. It parallels US-101, but is much more curved, and has lower speed limits. But it travels right through the trees, without a large cleared area to compensate for driver error.

This was taken at the "Immortal Tree" location. The immortal part comes from the tree having been struck by lightning and still growing. None of the trees in this photo are that tree, but do give some indication of the size of these trees.
A casualty in the midst of the forest. That's one big tree. Or rather was.

At the same location as the above two photos. It's not uncommon for these redwoods to have a hollow base. At least of them is wide enough to drive a car through, and one other was turned into a "home".
