The Yakima canyon is located between Ellensburg and Yakima, both located at the eastern edge of the Cascades. A railway line and secondary road follow the river through the canyon. The river is flowing quite well, considering how dry this year has been. (There are several dams upstream.) Note also how the vegetation against the river is lush, the hills typical dry country at the end of summer.

There are a number of recreational areas along the river. This is the view from the Umtanum area, looking upstream from the bridge crossing the river.
