Walking Day 2

MIT Museum

Apart from being a major institution of higher learning, MIT also has a museum, displaying some of the work being done there. Included (but not photographed) is the work on making computers more like humans when interacting with humans. Little did I know that Dr. Cynthia Breazeal, the person leading this work, was to be the closing speaker at the Usenix conference. She is doing very interesting work in this area, and it looks quite promising for improving human/computer interaction.

Robots

MIT Museum, 'Unipod' robot

A one legged robot. It would seem difficult to keep such an entity upright, but perhaps that is easier (at least dynamically) than balancing a two or more legged thing.

MIT Museum, Planar Biped walking robot

A TWO legged robot - progress?

Whirlwind Memory Test Computer

Whirlwind was an early experimental computer system, the creator of many important technologies, including core memory! Click for details

Project Whirlwind core memory testing computer (first use of core memory!)

A test jig for verifying the first core memory to be used. Not actually part of Whirlwind's system, but just as important.

Project Whirlwind core memory testing computer (first use of core memory!)

A closer view of the core stack being tested. How memory technology has changed in the last 40 years!
