Boston Overview

June 24th

I flew to Boston for this year's Usenix Technical Conference. It was my first trip to Boston, and fortunately I had two spare days during the conference to visit the sites. The conference was held in the Marriott Hotel at Copley Place. This is located close (within walking distance, for some definition of walking!) of downtown, and many of the historical locations of significance in this part of the world.

This map shows some section of Boston. The map is bigger than my scanner. so I can't show all of it. The location of the hotel is shown with the red arrow. Downtown Boston is on the right of the map, as is Boston Harbour, site of that famous tea party.

This map shows more detail of the hotel area. My room is indicated by the red arrow; I was on the 27th floor, looking roughly west south west. The 'T' in a box is the train station, and it was indeed nice to be in a city with trains. They do make getting around so much easier and more predictable.

View from room 2739 Marriott Copley Square, Boston; Christian Science Church #1

The view out of my window. The black spots are dirt on the outside of the windows. This view is looking west. The building with the dome is part of the headquarters of the Christian Science Church - their equivalent of the Vatican. Apart from their religious activities, they publish a highly regarded newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor

My initial thoghts were that the dome was the state house (or parliament house). However, it is the actual church building.
