Around The Sound

Port Townsend Proper

Because of its function as a port, a number of substantial government buildings were constructed in the city. Although no longer used for their original purpose, they are still quite imposing buildings, and maintained in first rate condition. Port Townsend works hard at maintaining its Victorian atmosphere and designs.

Port Townsend Customs House or Post Office, from ferry dock

This is the US Post Office. Probably one of the more impressive Post Office buildings in the country, with an excellent view over the ferry wharf and the waterfront. Probably important, as most likely the mail arrived by sea. It was also the Customs House, in days gone by.

The Jefferson County Courthouse, built in 1891. The bell tower even has a bell, which chimes on the hour.

The Ferry

Ferry approaching Port Townsend wharf

The ferry's coming! These are some of the smaller ferries on the Sound. They also stop running at times during very low tides.
