Around The Sound

May 7th

It was time to go for a ride, so a trip around Hood Canal was in order. Hood Canal is west of Puget Sound, separated from it by the Kitsap Peninsula. Hood Canal is the home to the Bangor Submarine Base, among other things. The trip was to ride down to Olympia, then turn right onto Highway 101, which circumnavigates the Olympic Peninsula.

View looking north up the Hood Canal, somewhere near Hoodsport. The bush with the yellow flowers in the foreground is Scotch Broom which grows in the wild here. When it flowers like this, it is quite pretty. Unfortunately the flowers don't last very long, and for much of the year it is rather unattractive.

Port Townsend

From Port Townsend, the plan was to catch the ferry to Whidbey Island, essentially across the "top" of Puget Sound, as Port Townsend is located more or less at the junction of the Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There is a Port Towsend Guide available on the net should you wish to find out more about the city.

Port Townsend was once a thriving settlement, rivalling Seattle. However, the fame was short lived, as the railway was built to Seattle, making the latter the pre-eminent port on the Sound. Port Townsend went into decline, but has revived quite nicely.
