Austin Pass, Mt Baker

Mt. Baker, Austin Pass

Austin Pass is the main Visitor Center at Mt. Baker. Bagley Lake shown here is actually artificial - there is a very small dam wall at the far end. Elevation here is about 1400 metres (4500 feet). This view is looking roughly NE, into Canada.

There is a great deal of snow still at Mt. Baker, even at this relatively low altitude (compare with Mt. Rainier, at 6400 feet with no snow). The winter of 1998/1999 set a record snow fall here, and some of it is still around, 18 months later. The interesting observation here is the way that water running out of the parking lot has melted a tunnel through this snow bank.

Mt. Baker, view of Mt. Shuksan from Artist Point

Leaving Austin Pass, the road climbs over 100 metres to an area with a number of trails leading around a mountain top. This is part way up the hill. The mountain is Mt. Shuksan, 2792 metres (9000 feet).
