I had a car booked at the airport, and after some trouble getting to Avis, I was told to catch their bus to the carpark, and thereafter all was well. I had a choice of cars, and choose the Fiat, perhaps because I have never driven one before. It was a manual, since automatics are hard to come by in Europe, at least in smaller size cars, and this was a smaller car. I realised that the last manual car I had was the Torana, so there was no adjustment needed for the gear lever being on the left! Although the turn indicator was on the other side of the steering wheel, so sometimes the wipers came on instead of turn signals! And not having driven, or even been in a car much for nearly 2 weeks, adjusting to the left side of the road was not much of a problem.
I was staying the night with Laurie Griffiths in Southampton, and had his instructions on how to get there. No too much drama getting out of the airport, although British road signs are not all that clear. I needed to get to the M4, the M25 then the M3 to Southampton, followed by a number of streets to reach the destination. I managed to do that without too much trouble. Once in Southampton, I only took a couple of wrong turns, but was able to recover without too much difficulty.
Laurie's house is a couple of hundred years old. It is a semi-detached/duplex. Originally thought to be the school house for the church across the park. Laurie and Alison are re-decorating, and the lounge room was empty when I arrived. It was finished on Friday, and the furniture returned, providing much more room in the rest of the house.
We went out for dinner at a restaurant/pub on the docks. Quite enjoyable it was too.
