Ancient Rome

Wednesday, April 23

Ah, just like home - the long distance trains were on strike! We had thought of travelling to Firenze/Florence, but this idea was cancelled when thoughts of a strike appeared the day before. No sense being stranded a long way from the airport on the last day in Italy. So we decided to spend the day in Rome.

In particular, we went looking for the Via Appia Antica. The Via Appia is a Roman Road name I remember from Latin at school, one of the major roads around Rome. The "Antica" part means old, and in fact, it still uses the same stones as in Roman times. It would be fun to walk on a 2000 year old road. Alas, we decided to walk, since nothing else was scheduled, and it was a nice day. However, after much walking, it turns out that we could not walk there. Well, perhaps we could, but it meant walking along the edge of a busy road, which I did not fancy. Especially as we did not know how far. So we gave up, and ended up walking back part of the way, then catching the train and heading back to the Via Veneto, whereupon we found the good restaurant that Rob discovered, and so we had another enjoyable lunch, before slowing ambling back to the hotel.

I don't remember much about what we did that afternoon, or what was left of it. However, we eventually ended up in the hotel "bar", and talked about the display project, whereupon I suggested an improvement which should reduce costs and simplify the manufacturing side. The trip was probably worth it for this, if nothing else.
