St. Peter's Basilica
Thursday, April 17
We decided to walk to the Vatican, as we were unable to enter
St. Peter's
yesterday. The basilica is just overwhelming. It's beautiful,
with amazing art through out. And it is so
BIG.
It makes the Earlwood church look tiny. We also went up to the cupola, the
top of the dome. And it goes a long way up. We took the lift for the first
part. It ends about the roof level for the building, which is the base
of the dome. From there, there are 320 steps to the viewing platform. And
as the dome curves in towards the centre, the stairways have curved walls,
meaning that it is necessary to walk with a lean to fit in! But since Rome
is basically flat, with no tall buildings, the view is quite impressive.
After this we walked to more of the Roman sites. Firstly the
Colesseum,
which is a large building even by today's standards. Then we walked to
the
Piazza Navona,
via the
Trevi Fountain,
which was quite
impressive. The Piazza Navona is nothing too spectacular, except that it
is large, and was used for horse racing by the residents. It's also something
of a place to be seen, or so it appeared. From there we went to
Piazza Di Spana,
which is at the base of the Spanish Steps, which is a very
pretty area, being a wide "staircase", with attractive gardens all the
way up.
From there, we walked back to the hotel, and had dinner at a local restaurant
