Playing Tourist In Rome
Wednesday, April 16
The next morning (Wednesday) we caught a cab to the
Vatican,
and went on a tour of the Sistine Chapel with
Michelangelo's
breathtaking ceiling,
and
Botticelli's
wonderful frescoes.
This has recently (and still is, in fact)
undergoing a cleaning operation, and the difference between the untouched
and the cleaned is amazing. The art is just amazing. Not just its content,
but the amount. Unfortunately I did not have my video camera, so there
is no record of this. Not that it would be easy to convey the size of everything.
Afterwards, we stumbled into the area in front of St. Peter's, just as
His Holiness was finishing his Wednesday activities. (I don't know what
we actually missed). We then walked back to our hotel, getting a feel for
the layout of the city, and checking out some of the ruins along the way.
