Closer To Home

Across calm water to headland with houses along shore

Most likely Brisbane Waters between Gosford and Woy Woy.

View through spindly trees across calm water distant hills with houses

Also likely to be Brisbane Waters between Gosford and Woy Woy.

Vacant land with

Barry's land at Patti Place, Woy Woy - before any building in the development.

Road with flags at entrance to vacant blocks of land

The view from Barry's block to the start of his street. Note the flags across the street - presumably they had not yet all sold. This must have been not long after Barry bought the land, as I remember it being a hot day when that happened, so it was probably a few months earlier.

Sydney Opera House under construction with crane

Ah, the memories. Sydney's Opera House under construction, and a passing Manly Ferry. I remember Dad taking me in on Sunday mornings to view the construction progress; and there were two cranes earlier on.

Circular tower building viewed from the base

Australia Square was another construction project in mid 1967! I am assuming this because of the builder (Civil and Civic) sign on the right hand side, and the crane on the far right!

Rock cutting with bridges over it, and cars parked on road

The Argyle Cut to provide a short cut over the top of Observatory Hill. This is looking west towards The Garrison Church (right on far side). The bridge further away is for the Harbour Bridge, and the nearer one is Cumberland Street.

Old stone church beside road tunnel

The Garrison Church - Australia's oldest, as I recall - and the Argyle Cut, looking east. The Harbour Bridge road is behind the church, and the concrete building on the left is likely associated with powering the train lines across the bridge and part of the underground.

Opera House under construction viewed from north west

Another view of the Opera House during construction. Clearly much was left to be done - the building is not weatherproof, there is no covering over the cement on the sides, and the water line is still not covered. On the cliff to the far right are a couple of white buildings; the one on the left I think is the viewing platform where Dad used to take me to see the progress.
