Today was a family first - Dad rented a car! That's because we wanted to go north to Port Douglas, and up to the tablelands, and it was more convenient to drive at our pace. Plus, being so early in the tourist development of the area, there may not have been much of an alternative.
We stayed at the Siesta Motel right on the waterfront! The motel was a 2 storey building, not the one with balconies showing behind the sign.
The view from the waterfront across The Esplanade to our motel. This is, obviously, a morning photo.
This photo is taken from the same location as the one above - clearly we had waterfront views! Pity it was low tide when this was taken. I expect it is now very different.
Well, likely north of Cairns, but your guess is as good as mine.
Mum and Dad and the rental car. It was the model before the one Dad owned and with a smaller engine, and also had a speed governor on it; it was quite gutless. However, it got us to the places we wanted to see.
Another beach north of Cairns; most likely Trinity or Ellis Beach.
From the 2005 trip to Port Douglas, this is recognised as the view from the Rex Lookout on the Captain Cook Highway.
Well, it was a rental car, so driving on the beach is not all that bad. Not as bad as driving through sea water. And this was in the period when cars rusted rather well.
Somewhere north of Cairns. I know we made it to Port Douglas, as I think we had dinner there. Still have the restaurant's card, and it is still in business (or at least was in 1965).
