Australia's first overseas combat was undertaken on the Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey) in 1915, as part of a joint force with New Zealand. The landing was a disaster, followed by a withdrawl. The troops went on to fight in Western Europe. The overall losses for the war was approximately 62,000.
