62,000 Handcrafted Poppies to Commemorate Lives Lost in WW I

Australia's first overseas combat was undertaken on the Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkey) in 1915, as part of a joint force with New Zealand. The landing was a disaster, followed by a withdrawl. The troops went on to fight in Western Europe. The overall losses for the war was approximately 62,000.

November 11, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the cessation of fighting.

To commemorate the event, 62,000 handcrafted poppies have been created by volunteers then placed on the lawn of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the national capital.
