In 1879, the wood-encased funicular's steam-powered engine operated only six months per year. The escarpment cable car afforded a convenient alternative to horse and buggy for the transportation of passengers and merchandise between upper and lower town. The funicular went into all year round operation when it was converted to electrical power in 1907.
In 1945, a fire destroyed completely the funicular and caused major damage to the Louis-Jolliet house. The funicular was rebuilt and fitted with a fire-resistant metallic enclosure. In 1978, it was replaced with a windowed-cabin to offer passengers a panoramic view of lower town and the majestic Saint Lawrence River.
