Day 3 - Catacombs of St. Callixtus

After St. John Lateran we travelled to the Via Appia Antica which is the original Roman road so well known to Latin scholars, namely the Via Appia. Along here are the catacombs, and specifically in our case, the Catacomb of St. Callixtus.

Unfortunately photographs are not allowed within the catacombs, so I have no photos. However, they are on the web at Christian Catacombs of Rome, which covers all the catacombs.

Approaching storm over St. Callixtus catacombs

Looks like a storm is brewing. What this some sort of omen?

Group N awaiting admission to catacombs

Group N waiting for admission, which is done in groups based on language. Our group guide was a priest from the USA.

After the tour we had our first group Mass, concelebrated by Bishop Geoffrey and Father Mark. Alas, I didn't think to take a photo of this Mass, held in such an historic and important area.

Sunset at the catacombs

A glorious sunset to end our day's tour.
