Now it was time to rejoin Skyrail for the trip to the next stop, Red Peak Station, the second (of two) stopping points along the way.
Back on board at Barron Falls Station, the cable car is about to leave the
station and head out over the forest.
Over the forest we go. You may have noticed a certain lack of patronage
in the cars coming towards me. This is mostly due to the time of day. Traffic
is up in the morning, and returns (to Cairns) in the afternoon. This was mid
afternoon, and the last car departs at 5:15PM, so it's reaching the time of
day when there is not enough time to take Skyrail and be able to return that day.
The Barron River below the falls, and before the new power station.
Another view of Barron Falls. This would be most spectacular in the wet
season, with the Falls in full flow. Skyrail operates 364 days per year (no service
on Christmas Day), and the photos showing the Falls in full flow are most
impressive - this would be a great viewpoint!
A dead tree in the forest, but in this sort of tropical rainforest,
a dead tree is not
without life,
as the close up image shows. It's not very clear because the photo
was taken through the car windows, and in this section, there was some
side to side movement of the cars, including a sometimes slowing.
Descending to a lower part before climbing to Red Peak Station, just over the
brow of the coming hill.
Looking south over the Barron River gorge (which is not really visible here,
due to the height).
Showing the route of the Kuranda Scenic Railway line along the far side
of the Barron River gorge. It's construction, by hand, was quite an
accomplishment, and it well deserves the Institution of Engineers award.
