The journey from Freshwater Station begins by travelling through cane fields, and small communities before the line starts to climb up to Kuranda.
A sugar cane field just near Freshwater Station. This would be the second
crop of the season. There was conflicting evidence of whether this would be
harvested in 2005, or would be the first crop of 2006.
After passing Redlynch, the ascent begins, and includes a 180 degree turn, which has been nicely cleared to allow photographers to capture both ends of the train.
Further up the hill, and there's our first view over the coastal plain
out into the Coral Sea, and even
Green Island,
a coral cay which is 27km from Cairns. Interesting information on Green
Island is available at many sites, including
Walkabout.
Looking towards the western end of Cairns.
The red roofed building in the middle of this image is in Redlynch, and probably somewhere
above it (on the image) is Freshwater Station. The Coral Sea is in the background.
The rail line runs parallel with the road on the left side of the red roof.
The rail line is just visible on the side of this hill, just below the tree
branch. It's more clearly visible in this
detailed view.
There are 15 tunnels on the journey! In addition, there are 93 curves,
numerous bridges and 75km of track.
The left image shows one end of the curved bridge, partly visible in this view out of the carriage window, showing just the tip of the leading locomotive. The other two are views along the train as it slowly crosses the bridge.
The views outside the train as it crosses the bridge - left is a view of the falls, and the right is looking out towards the Coral Sea.
A view of the Falls looking back over the train as it pulls off the bridge.
