A few months back, cousin Garry (in Toronto) and I independently went looking for the home which Dot, Bill and their boys lived in at Manly Vale. Garry remembered the address, but I remembered the track to Manly Dam starting at the side of the house. Well, we both found the house, but satellite images don't really tell to much. And it's been about 50 years since either of us was there, so our memories were neither clear nor reliable.
Today was a nice day for a ride, so after having coffee with some friends in Mosman, it was time to head back to 2 Maroa Crescent, Manly Vale, to see what is there now.
Maroa Crescent is a U shaped street. This is one end, and number 2 is off to the right of the photo; the other end is off to the left. This view is looking south.
Nyrang Road which is the road at the bottom of the photo above. This view is looking east. Nyrang Road is the way in, connecting to Kentwell Road a little to the left of the far end of the street.
No 2 Maroa Crescent, Manly Vale. The very block where Dot and Bill lived for a couple of years, perhaps in the late 50s or early 60s.
The front view of the house. It's obviously quite new construction, and does not at all fit my recollection. Not that I would trust that too much.
There is now a paved parking lot at the head of the track leading to Manly Dam, which is located behind in the distance, though not visible from here.
And other memories came back too. Kentwell Road is the main access route to Condamine Street which connects to the Spit Bridge and the rest of Sydney. I could not have told you the name of that road, but it rang that famous bell as soon as Margaret (the GPS receiver) said it! Memory is, indeed, a marvellous and mysterious thing.
