Flynn In The City

For Flynn's birthday I offered to take him (and Jake and Michelle) into the city to visit Hobbyco, hobby and toy store, which used to be located in George Street, but is now in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney. And my brother Peter pointed out the Lego exhibition taking place in the Sydney Town Hall - just across Druit Street from the QVB!

So, a visit was arranged.

The Art of The Brick

This was the title of the exhibition of work by Nathan Sawaya. There is an exhibition link, though of uncertain duration.

Lego mosaic showing Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge at sunset

The first item seen walking into the exhibition, showing the familiar view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge at sunset.

Note that I did not think to take a camera, so these were all taken with my (oldish) Nokia N95. The camera at hand...

Close up of Lego mosaic, showing use of different coloured, regular blocks This is a close up of the mosaic, showing the dithering used to achieve the range of colours from the limited palette of Lego blocks.

Man stepping on ladder, but ladder top curls over into his outstretched arms Climbing this ladder would be an interesting experience. It seems better suited to a pole vaulting event.

Dinosaur skeleton The largest piece in this exhibit is this dinosaur skeleton. That's Shell and Flynn on the left.

Dinosaur skeleton head and front ribs A close up view of the dinosaur skeleton head. One of the exhibition monitors implied that the bricks are glued, which seems likely, as the pieces are transported as is. No assembly required!

Boy standing near 2 Lego figures of his height Flynn standing next to this Lego couple. And that dinosaur is close by.

Boy moving out of position next to Lego couple Jake started moving out of the picture a little early. The blue showing on the couple is a reflection of the phone's flash.

International peace symbol in multi coloured Lego blocks Perhaps the most colorful peace symbol ever - courtesty of Lego!

Close up showing blocks forming peace symbol circle Closer view of the top of the circle showing construction details.

Artist's corner, with table and bowl of fruit, chest of drawers and painting on easel Everything behind the barrier here is Lego - even the floor tiles!

Painting on easel, in full colour amidst monochrome scene The piece of art, showing it as basically a brick wall, with appropriate use of coloured blocks to produce the image.

Light blue blocks in the shape of a swimmer in a darker blue pool of water The title says it all: The Swimmer.

Boy in front of statue, imitating pose with outstretched arms Flynn and/or Jake wanted to go into the Town Hall (the Lego exhibition was in the basement). So, we wandered up, and discovered the Red Gate Gallery: Two Generations exhibition of Chinese art - part of the Chinese New Year celebration. It was a small exhibit, with some quite interesting art. This is one of the statues in the exhibition, and Flynn does his best imitation of the figure.
