The Pinnacles

Before dinner, Peter suggested we head up to The Pinnacle a local hill with good views to the west. So, off we went.

Vehicle track through grass and trees, and a couple of kangaroos After finding the correct parking location, Peter and I started following this track. Note that it was nearing sunset, a time at which kangaroos come out to eat. And lo and behold! A couple of kangaroos.

3 kangaroos, two staring at camera, one just watching The kangaroos were watching us - ready to hop away if we got too close. The tall one at the rear might have been prepared to fight. They were certainly keeping us under surveillance.

Kangaroo in grass, munching away This one was quite happy to keep on eating.

Past The Kangaroos

View over trees to distant hills into the distance, and a couple of tall buildings mid distance Looking roughly south, with the tall building likely Woden Valley. There are a number of mountain ranges to the south east of Canberra; it's not clear which the distant ones are.

Rounded crest of small hill, with trees at top "There it is, men!" [Old family joke about a fire chief pointing to the fire] In all it's glory, The Pinnacle. Though, having no competition, the name is appropriate.

Sun setting behind tree, with haze and mist around distant mountains Seeing that the sun is setting over there, it's likely this view is towards the west. And they would be the Brindabella Range.

View over trees, to distant rolling hills in late afternoon sun Looking roughly north, probably over Belconnen, judging by the sun coming in from the left (and thus west).

Distant hill between nearby trees, with mountains further behind The hill in the middle foreground is Mt. Stromlo, where the ANU has its observatory. It was also destroyed by the Canberra fires of 2003, which came in from the mountains behind, and up and over Mt. Stromlo.

Distant hill with telescopes on top; mountains behind Mount Stromlo, as seen from The Pinnacle, with the Brindabella Range behind.

Adult and young kangaroo, with flash reflecting in their eyes On the way back, the kangaroos were still feeding. This one was so interested/perturbed by us as to turn around and watch. But I guess that's an offspring on the right, so training is in progress. And note that eyes - a bit worrying!

A kangaroo in profile, with joey in pouch Mother and child eating together - there's a joey in the nearer kangaroo's pouch.

Kangaroo with grass in mouth, and red eyes from flash Caught in the act - grass in mouth, and dig those red eyes. Murine needed here!

Grey clouds with pink edges behind a dead tree The day is drawing to a close.

After returning to the car, it was back to Peter's before heading out to dinner - Peter and Sarah, and Callum and Maddie. Upon returning home, some late night conversation ensued before bed.
