Day 2 - Heading Home

Questacon

On Sunday morning we headed to Questacon, the hands-on science and engineering centre in Canberra. Not many photos from here, as it's mostly an activity based centre, with some quite fascinating exhibits.

The above is the Going Places exhibit. The operator consoles allow control of traffic lights and other activites on the system. The user can snarl traffic as much as desired! They are the only photos from Questacon; it's hard for a photo to convey the action involved, including such things as the earthquake simulator home. Experience a quake, and never forget it.

Lunch

We stopped for a picnic lunch in a park between Old Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin.

Here the boys are gallantly defending us from the enemy coming down the park from the Treasury Building (I think that's what it is) - perhaps they are tax collectors!

Over lawn to wide street, War Memorial and mountain behind. This photo matches the corresponding one taken from the steps of the War Memorial yesterday. Only this time, the view is from the Old Parliament House.

Long, white 2 storey building across lawn The Old Parliament House, with its basically simple, yet elegant design. It has aged well, even with the extensions required to handle the growing number of people working the building.

Entrance to white building with 3 flags visible on different poles This is the main entrance to Old Parliament House, which I believe has been transformed into a museum of democracy. The three flags are (closest) the Aboriginal flag, the other two being the Australian flag; the one at the rear is atop the New Parliament House, the middle one being on the old building.

Homeward Bound

Four storey high sheep in parking lot Australia has an attraction to big things. The first I remember was the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour; it is still there! This one - the Big Merino, used to sit near the Hume Highway, but was recently moved, and refurbished to be located near a petrol station and fast food outlets at the Goulburn exit from the highway. It certainly is big. We pulled in as the car needed petrol, and a some food was taken on board.

Country scene; distant farmhouse, lady and young boy near pond Somewhat later, the boys needed to let off steam, so we stopped at a rest area. Hard as it is to imagine, this tranquil rural scene was the sight of some hectic defending by the boys!

From here it was an entirely uneventful return to Sydney, to end a pleasant, and quite educational, two day excursion to the national capital.
