Day 1 - Getting There for Sunset

Jeffery had booked accomodation for a couple of nights in Mariposa, the nearest settlement to the national park which also provided accommodation! It's not too long a drive from there into the park - about 30 miles to the entrance, though it is not much of a high speed road. The plan was to head off to Mariposa, check in and then off to the park for a reconnaissance mission to scout things out for the next couple of days exploring/photographing.

Pacheco Pass & San Luis Dam

The route from Jeffrey's home was south on 101 to Gilroy then across Pacheco Pass towards Merced thence Mariposa. Pacheco Pass is described thus:

On June 21, 1805, Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga, on his first exploratory journey into the San Joaquin Valley, traversed this pass and recorded it.

Since then it has been trail, toll road, stage-coach road and freeway - the principal route between the coastal areas to the west and the great valley and mountains to the east.

Parking lot in dry area, with a couple of trees Sign warning of rattlesnakes

We pulled into the San Luis Dam parking lot, as seen in the left photo above, and observe the warning about rattlesnakes. OK, I can take a hint. Despite that, we didn't see one. Well, the sign does say may be found in the area.

Dam wall with almost no water behind it; shrub in foreground These shrubs, at the visitor center, are the only really green items around here. And note the water level in the dam is a long way down, approximating the top of the inlet to the outlet control structures. But it is the end of summer, so hopefully there may be some rain soon. The dark area running across near the top of the image is the dam wall!

  • to irrigate corn to feed the cow
  • to process beef and cheese

The above is a clever way of displaying how much water is consumed for the production of one quarter pound cheeseburger! That's a lot of water - 2600 litres, or almost 700 gallons of precious water.
