On October 7th, 2006, the full moon corresponded with the moon's apogee, i.e. its closest approach to the earth on this orbit. Just as I was finishing dinner, I looked out the window and there was the moon.
The moon rising behind a house down the block. The moon's detail is washed out, as a suitable exposure to capture its surface detail causes the rest of the image to be black.
A full view of the moon. This was taken with a Nikon D-70 with 200mm Nikor lens, equivalent to a 300mm lens in a 35mm camera. The exposure was 1/800sec, f/4.0, and a "film speed" of (I think) 640. The image was a little underexposed, but that was easily corrected via GIMP, and ensured little, if any, loss of detail. Note this image has been cropped, whereas the one above is full resolution, but shrunk to the size I prefer.
