Ballard Locks

Rob Michael was visiting me in Seattle for the last time, and so we decided to have lunch at Anthony's Home Port at Shilshole, then head off to the Ballard Locks for some photographic work, especially so that Rob could use his new camera.

From just outside Anthony's we could watch boats passing to and from the Ballard Locks (off to the left in this photo), and also enjoy a panorama of the Olympic Mountains.

This boat above is heading towards the Locks. The houses on the top of the cliff behind it have, no doubt, a great view. But I had expected to hear one day that they had slipped into the Sound as the cliff was washed away underneath them.

There is also a great deal of commercial traffic along the Sound, as this container ship shows, as well as much barge traffic, as is the case with the vessel in front.

Ballard Locks

Having seen about all there is to see, we headed off the Ballard Locks, which are operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The associated gardens are also well maintained. The locks are officially called the "Hiram M Chittenden Locks" after the commander of the local Corps who pushed for their construction. Many details are available at historylink.org.

The red/white flowers are arranged to form the shape of the logo used around the locks - it's a sort of castle, with turrets on top and a large entry portal at the base. The white part is the building.

Now time to head into the locks themselves. The building here is the main administration building. The flag is at half mast/staff because this day was the 4th anniversary of the attacks on The World Trade Center and Pentagon.
