A New Camera

It was time for a new camera, specifically one that used standard 35mm lenses! I was not ready to spring for a full 35mm sized image sensor, so the Nikon D70s was the chosen model. And using standard 35mm lenses meant I could also have a polarising filter!

The above two photos were taken 20 seconds apart, yet they appear very different. The difference is the setting of the polarizing filter. The right hand photo has substantially deeper colours. Neither photo has been manipulated, other than to shrink the size. Both were taken out the family room window, looking south south east, at about 5:40PM.

Ah, the back yard, showing the results of a summer of neglect (well, sort of, as I was away for part of June and the whole of July).

Magnusson Park

Later in the day I thought it would be interesting to head over to Magnusson Park and photograph sunset on Mt. Rainier - there's an excellent view of the mountain from the park, and you can see the earth's shadow creeping up the side of the mountain. It was also intended as a test to see if a longer lens was required. Well, I expected I would, but try before buy... As it turned out, the mountain was just a little pimple on the horizon, so no photos included here, and a new lens was on the shopping list!

Ah, the ducks are coming home for the night.

A photo my old digital camera would have made very difficult if not impossible to take - catching ducks in flight.

And so it was time to follow the lead of the ducks and head home.
