After a continental style breakfast at the motel, we began our last day of the road trip - destination Kenmore!
A rest stop in southern Oregon. Still with nice trees.
The further north one travels along I-5 in Oregon, the
fewer trees nearby.
Our destination was Lafayette, which is south west of Portland.
This plan goes back to about 1993, when Peter, Yvonne and Keiran
were visiting, and we set out to find the Trappist Abbey
in Oregon. The location wasn't well known, and in fact we
made it no further than Mt. St. Helens, deciding to take a
detour there on the way down, only to find it was a day's journey
by itself! So, as we were approaching from southern Oregon,
a detour to Lafayette seemed in order. And we were getting hungry.
We found the "One Way Cafe", and had a good burger and more
conversation than one would expect. Our host, and chef, Tom,
on the left here, refused payment. We did leave a generous tip.
Perhaps the most interesting lunch we had any time during this journey.
We found
the Abbey.
Tom gave us directions, which were effective enough
to eventually find the entrance to the Abbey, which surprisingly
does not have any flashing lights! And it turns out
that this is the Abbey from whom I bought some fruit cakes last
Christmas. And re-stocked while here, too!
This is the Abbey's main church. The monks are currently raising
money for a refurbishing and updating program.
Yvonne and Peter at a very attractive Cross.
After a pleasant period here in the peace and quiet of the Abbey, we resumed our journey. Again since we were in the "neighbourhood" we planned to visit the Spruce Goose which is located at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.
