June 23rd was the day to pack up and head north, with reservations for the evening at Grants Pass in southern Oregon.
Yvonne outside the motel's cafe. Note the clothing - for
summer!
The lobby of the motel looked out on this quite pleasant
courtyard.
Ah, summer in San Francisco. Reminds me of Mark Twain's comment:
The worst winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco.
Remember this is late June, and that old San Francisco fog
is in great abundance. People on tour boats might have
trouble seeing the Golden Gate Bridge on this day.
Ah, what a difference 130 miles (200 km) makes! This is
Highway 101. We stopped for gas and rest, and also to strip
off some clothing.
By around lunch time, we were nearing Piercy, which is about
the southern end of the redwood forests. So we stopped at
the store - one I have passed a number of times, but never
entered - to look around and buy something for lunch.
Well, it's both redwood and bear country!
And yet another bear. And Kelly, this is where your bear
came from!
And just north of Piercy is where "Avenue of the Giants"
begins - a delightful backroad journey through the amazing
redwood forests. This photo is of the Eel River, which more
or less parallels the road along most of its journey.
