After an uneventful landing, quite near the airport, we waited to be loaded onto the tour bus. Like the ground operations in Las Vegas, this was an event to happen when it happened. The first stop after the airport pickup was for lunch at one of the hotels in Tusayan, the town just outside the National Park boundary. The meal was OK for what it was, then we were back on the bus to Yavapi Point. The airport, town and viewpoints are visible on the map page.

Looking up along Bright Angel Canyon. The trees in the middle
of the photo indicate the location of "Phantom Ranch", most
easily reached from the North Rim Visitor Center, which is
off the top left corner of this photo.

Taking in the view. Bright Angel Canyon is the one leading to
the upper right above the hat. The hat is worn by Jeannie our
tour guide, and there's Peter with the red backpack.
Some people have more of a taste for adventure than I do. Well,
at least when it comes to heights!
All alone in this big canyon! And I always wonder how strong
is the rock underneath the viewing platform.
Peter contemplating the canyon. | Do squirrels contemplate? |
The many rock strata on the north canyon rim. And note that
this is only the upper canyon - the river is in the cutout
at the bottom of this picture.
This formation has an outline that looks like a war ship.
This is looking west, or (by now) into the sunset which makes
the haze more visible.
Ridge after ridge after ridge into the haze.
Ah, Jeannie our driver is waiting (in the shade, of course) for us
to return to head to the next (and final) stop on the tour.
