David and Christine suggested I stop at the Towrang Stockade just off the freeway, 10km North of Goulburn. The display board at this site contains the following information:- ${ The Towrang Stockade was the chief penal camp in the southern district of the newly formed colony of New South Wales, from about 1833 to 1843. The convicts housed there were engaged on the construction of part of the Great Southern Road from Sydney to Goulburn.
The stockade's remains are actually located across the highway from this visitor area.
The Towrang Bridge with details of its construction. For a sense of scale, there is a person (in blue) at the left end of the bridge.
If you are asking "Where is the water?", then you need to know that Lake George is an occasional lake. I have seen it lapping the edge of the road (way below the elevation of this photo), but it has been dry for quite a few years.
There are fences and cattle and/or sheep grazing where once there was water.
A composite image of the scene. OK, so it's like early Cinerama movies - this is only the second time I've joined photos to make a panorama.
