After a delightful dinner, Peter took me on a tour of Canberra. First stop was Mt. Ainslie, behind the War Memorial, looking down Anzac Parade towards Lake Burley Griffin, to Old Parliament House, and new Parliament House.
Wide area view from Mt. Ainslie, showing the War Memorial (domed building at bottom of photo) across Lake Burley Griffin to both Parliament Houses.
A closer view, showing the War Memorial (domed building at bottom), Anzac Parade, Lake Burley Griffin, Old Parliament House (the bright, white building) and the new Parliament House (behind the old one, and with the green sloping lights). The bright building on the right is the National Library, one of the more attractive buildings in Canberra, in my opinion.
A wide angle view of Canberra, with Anzac Parade on the left, and showing the Telstra Black Mountain tower on the right.
A (somewhat blurry) close up of the Black Mountain Tower, which rises 195m above the top of the mountain, and is the main transmitting site for radio and TV stations.
The Museum of Australia, located on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin, on the site of an old hospital. And there's that tower again in the background!
The Museum was, of course, closed when we reached it, but this shot shows the entrance and forecourt area. Quite an impressive piece of sculpture.
Although only intended as a temporary building when opened in 1927, this rather classical building lasted into the 1980s, until the much larger new building was opened. The new building is behind, and higher than this.
