She's Gonna Blow
Barometric Pressure
My neices and nephews gave me a weather station for Christmas 2000.
The Harris family has a long history of fascination with weather.
It took me a while to decide where to mount the station. I finally
settled on the back (south) wall of the family room, which gives
poor temperature readings (heat from the outside), but is otherwise
a very convenient place to see it and read the instruments.
On the morning of February 25th, I looked at the barometer and
was amazed at how high it was. "Normal" pressure is 1013 millibars;
as the photo shows, the barometer was reading 1052. The
extraordinary aspect of this is that summer is the time when
we have high pressure; commonly a large high pressure system
sits over the western USA, and gives us the glorious sunny days
we long for so much. But this was in winter!
