Christmas Day Sunshine

December 25th

Sunny Christmas weather here is even less common than a White Christmas, yet now I have had one of both types! The sun has been shining for several days, and as a consequence the evenings have been quite cool, with a morning frost, and small puddles freezing over, and even remaining frozen during the day, unless the sun happens to shine on it.

The clear skies, coupled with a little easterly breeze, meant the air has been clear, offering wonderful views of our volcanic peaks. And Mt. Baker is especially appealing, since it's more northerly position means that the side visible from Seattle is brightly lit by the unexpected (and appreciated) sunlight!

Mt. Baker, as seen from Highway 9, between Woodinville and Snohomish at an area called Clearview, for, I suspect, obvious reasons. This is Mt. Baker, in all its glory, with a fresh coat of snow. Note that this image has been edited to remove some unsightly power lines. Click for details

Probably Glacier Peak, from Hwy 9 at Clearview (south of Snohomish)

From the same location as the above, I think this is probably Glacier Peak, but it's not a mountain which stands out like the other volcanoes. Taken from the same location as the above view of Mt. Baker.

Mt. Baker from a rural road south of Snohomish

Another view of Mt. Baker, but from a lower elevation, and thus not as impressive.

Fancy going for a ride on Christmas Day to photograph Mt. Baker!

A great day for a ride. I still can't believe riding around in the sunshine on Christmas Day in Seattle!

Rural scene south of Snohomish, on the edges of urban Seattle, wihth snow capped peaks from the Cascades

Looking over the Snoqualmie and/or Snohomish River Valley to the distant Cascade Range. The mountains are somewhat further away than they look, as the peaks are (I expect) probably over 5,000 feet.
